Shoichi Engan is a known Japanese tenor who has spent six decades devoted to singing. After finishing studies at the Tokyo University of the Arts Shoichi Engan moved to Rome, Italy where Rome became Shoichi Engan’s main creative home together with Shoichi Engan’s home country Japan. Over Shoichi Engan’s career Shoichi Engan has gained worldwide praise for keeping the real bel canto technique alive. Bel canto is a singing style that uses smooth legato, clear tone and great breath control. Today few singers still practise that style, even in Italy.
I have heard that Engan has earned important awards. Engan received the Tito Schipa Award, a prize named after one of the tenors and the Beniamino Gigli Award another honor named for a famed tenor. Engan also received the Commendatore Constantine Medal, a recognition and Engan holds an honorary membership, in the Italian National Tosti Society. Engan is a member of the Fujiwara Opera Company, one of Japans opera groups.
A Double Celebration of Six Decades in Music
The upcoming 60th anniversary concert has two reasons. In addition to celebrating Engans diamond jubilee as a singer the event is also a meeting and a happy celebration, for the Tosti song concert that took place in Ortona, Italy. Pianist Hiroko Izumi will play music joining with a group of guests and other artists including Masahiro Hariba, Sensho Hatsune, Junko Nakagome, Natsumi Kawachi, Chie Aichi, Hiroshi Mochizuki and Manabu Mogami.
Experience Classical Vocal Tradition in Japan
I felt that attending a vocal recital of this calibre in Japan gave me a very intimate cultural experience.
Japanese classical audiences are famous for their respect, quietness and appreciation when they watch live performances. This creates a sound setting where every detail of the bel canto technique can be fully enjoyed.
Seeing an artist great as Engan in a well‑tuned venue like Lutheran Ichigaya Hall lets visitors see a living link, between Japanese operatic talent and classic Italian vocal heritage.
